About Cardiff
Cardiff is a small, peaceful rural town in the South West of Western Australia, located just 10 kilometres south-east of Collie and approximately 220 kilometres from Perth. Set amid rolling farmland, jarrah forests, and bushland, Cardiff offers a quiet country lifestyle that blends natural beauty, outdoor recreation, and a strong connection to the surrounding community. Its location near Collie and the broader South West region makes it an ideal spot for those seeking rural living with easy access to regional amenities.

The town is surrounded by scenic landscapes, including forests, farmland, and the spectacular Lake Kepwari. This calm, inviting environment is perfect for walking, cycling, fishing, and simply enjoying the tranquility of country life. Cardiff is a place where nature and community come together, offering a slower pace without feeling isolated.

A Rich History
Cardiff’s history is closely tied to the coal-mining industry of Collie. The original settlement began as “Collié-Burn” in 1907, and in 1916, the southern portion of the townsite was renamed Cardiff, inspired by the famous coal-mining city in Wales. During the 20th century, Cardiff’s colliery played a significant role in the local economy, shaping the town’s growth and character.

After mining activity ceased in the 1960s, some of the open-cut pits were left to fill naturally, forming what is now Lake Kepwari—a popular recreation area. Today, Cardiff honours its industrial roots while embracing the natural beauty that has since taken over, reflecting both resilience and transformation. The area remains part of the traditional lands of the Wiilman people of the Noongar nation, who have lived in and cared for this land for thousands of years.

Lifestyle & Surroundings
Life in Cardiff is peaceful, outdoors-focused, and community-oriented. Lake Kepwari is one of the town’s central attractions, offering swimming, fishing, boating, kayaking, and camping. The surrounding forests and farmland provide endless opportunities for walking, cycling, and exploring nature.

While Cardiff itself is small and has limited services, nearby Collie provides schools, shops, healthcare, and community facilities, making everyday life convenient while keeping the charm of rural living. Residents enjoy the tranquillity of wide open spaces, fresh air, and natural surroundings, while still being part of a connected regional community.
